It is so easy for me to go down rabbit holes when I am online. This past week, on Instagram, I started watching shark videos, and somehow, many videos later, I was watching gorillas at the zoo, fascinated by human babies. Animal videos suck me in every time!

Today, my mom sent me a song by Christian musician Forrest Frank called Good Day. I have listened to it before, but it dawned on me to look him up on Apple Music, and I am glad I did. His music is upbeat, positive, and, most importantly, focused entirely on God. The next thing I knew, I was singing very poorly at the top of my lungs to songs I did not even know, but they were fun…and no one was around to hear my off-key singing.

After an hour of listening to music by different Christian artists similar to Forrest, I couldn’t remember his name, so I had to go back and search for him using the title of the song I did know.

When I started typing in “Good Day,” a different musician’s song popped up with the explicit lyrics symbol. I decided to do a bit more digging and searched for common, seemingly innocuous words. I typed in the words car, home, heart, life, save, love, and play, and every time, within the top five results, there was a song with that symbol, E.

I was struck by how easy it is to search for something good and positive that brings us closer to God and end up looking at or listening to something detrimental to our health, happiness, and faith. As believers, we are not only called to be aware of things around us that keep us from His goodness but to also be intentional in our choices.

Yet, because of the sheer availability and oversaturation of worldviews not centered on God, it can be all too easy to give into the world’s temptations and perspectives instead of clinging to God’s promises and redemption.

1 Corinthians 10:12 says, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (NKJV)

This verse provides comfort because it says that temptation is common. I don’t know about you, but it reassures me to know that for every temptation I have, another person is struggling with the same thing. Do I wish that they didn’t have to deal with it? Of course, especially knowing how frustrating it is to cope with the same issues and emotions daily. Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world, and temptation is part of that.

The second part of this verse can provide us with strength and fortitude because it says that God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle. How amazing is this?! God, who lovingly formed us, promises to help us be overcomers! Trusting Him with our small, everyday choices, like what we listen to, can be challenging, especially when we feel overwhelmed, fatigued, or discouraged. But God is faithful, and we can cling to his power and righteousness.

The last part of this verse provides some practical application. Once we know we are not alone in our struggles and acknowledge that God is faithful, it can be easier to deal with temptations because there will always be a way out. The more we pray and ask God to help, the more we can witness all the ways he provides ways out of temptations. We can have hope, knowing that God’s strength is more powerful than our weaknesses.

Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold unwaveringly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (NIV)
