The other day, I attended a local foodbank drive and could take home some extra food, mainly meat and potatoes. As my husband and I cooked the food we got, we started to realize how much we take for granted when we can go to the grocery store and get food of good quality. The potatoes we got made my husband sick, and the meat had tiny bone slivers that were choking hazards. All I could think was how there are so many underprivileged families, and this is all they have, pesticide potatoes and choke-hazard meat.
Besides feeling frustrated that I can do nothing to change the food that is given, I was reminded of a truth about God when reading my Bible today.
Psalm 132:15 says, “I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread.” (NKJV)
In this one verse, I was reminded that God is generous. He promises blessings on His provisions. Think about that for a second. He promises blessings on what He provides! He gives us what we need and even more, abundantly more!
I think of it in the context of a recent job I got. God provided the job that I love, yet he also gave abundantly more! Although the financial blessings are a relief, it is the joy of being able to work after years of being unable to. It is also drawing me closer to Him, with an urgent dependence on Him to help me be a light in my place of employment. He gave, and then He gave more, all so I and others could know Him more!
God also says in this verse that He will satisfy the poor with bread. Again, God provides and gives. And what He gives is never of poor quality. It brings to mind what Jesus says in Matthew 7:9-11:
“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (NKJV)
God doesn’t give halfway, and He doesn’t give us bad things. When He said that He would satisfy the poor with bread, He didn’t mean day-old or burnt bread. He didn’t mean scraps of bread from someone’s table. When He promised bread, He meant it would nourish the poor in body and spirit. God’s plan was to continually give them good, fresh,-of-the-oven bread that satisfies their hunger for food and, hopefully, for Him.
We can live our lives with joy and faith by trusting that God sees our struggles and genuinely wants to give us abundantly more than we can even imagine. He is the God of the Universe. Everything that was, is, and is yet to come falls under His power and jurisdiction. He will always be a good, generous provider who loves us in ways we can never fathom, grasp, or see.
Pray About it:
Lord,
You have blessed me in more ways than I can even imagine. I know that you are working in my life and the lives of others to provide for us physically, mentally, and emotionally; yet I trust that true fulfillment comes from the fullness of your love in our lives. Guide us to draw near to You and praise You for all You do and for who You are.
-Amen
